Pool sales training

Pool Sales Training That Wins the Build Without Racing to the Lowest Bid

Your designers know pools. They can walk a backyard, spot the drainage problem and sketch a layout the family loves. What nobody taught them is how to guide a household through a decision this big, with two spouses, a lender and three other bids in the mix. That is where a build either gets signed or turns into a price comparison. This training fixes that part.

Thirty minutes, no pitch deck. If training isn’t your problem, we’ll tell you.

Pool sales training teaches the designers and sales consultants at a pool company one repeatable conversation: book both decision makers, understand how the family wants to live in the backyard, design around it, present honest options with financing, and follow up until the family decides. Legacy Sales Engineering trains pool teams on real consultations, for pool builders and service companies in Florida and nationwide.

Why do good pool designers lose builds they should win?

Speaker addressing an audience with a microphone

Most pool builds are lost after the consultation, not during it. The designer runs a great visit, emails a proposal and waits. The family has one number to compare, three builders who all sounded good and no one helping them sort it out. Angi puts the average in-ground pool at about $65,900, with most homeowners paying somewhere between $44,500 and $87,300. At that price, the builder who stays in the conversation usually wins.

Inside most pool companies it looks the same. The owner closes the big builds, the designers close the easy ones, and proposals go quiet while the family waits on a lender. Spring hides the problem because there are so many new inquiries. Then the pace slows and every family who went with someone else becomes visible. That is a process problem, and a process can be taught.

What does pool sales training teach?

Our seven-step framework is the same sequence we teach every trade, rewritten for a pool consultation. The order matters more than any single line, because each step earns the right to the next.

We also teach designers to read which kind of buyer they are talking to and change pace to match. The spouse who wants the steel and plumbing specs and the spouse who wants to picture the first summer party need the same pool presented two different ways. See the four buyer types. If the problem is not enough consultations, our pool marketing page covers that side.

01Book both decision makers

The office confirms who will live with the pool and who signs, sets the consultation when both can be there and sends the designer's photo before arrival. Most "we need to talk it over" builds are lost at booking. More on one-legger appointments.

02Earn attention in the backyard

Walk the yard with the family first: where the sun sits in the afternoon, where the kids will be, what they saw at a friend's house, how long they plan to stay in the home.

03Diagnose with Solution Based Questions

Find what the family actually wants, whether that is time together, entertaining, exercise or resale, before anyone talks about gunite, fiberglass or vinyl.

04Design around what they told you

Sketch the layout, the finishes and the equipment around how they want to live, and show them photos of similar builds. Families who see their own backyard in the design trust the recommendation.

05Present honest options with financing

Two or three designs tied to what they said matters, what each one includes and what it leaves out, with the monthly payment next to the total and a clear next step with the lender. See high-ticket home service sales.

06Ask for the decision, then stop talking

The silence after the number is where designers start giving away decking and lights to get a signature.

07Follow up until the family decides

A recap with the design and photos the same day, a scheduled call after the lender answers and a cadence in the CRM, so no proposal depends on somebody's memory. That is our lead engagement work.

What makes selling a pool different from other home services?

It is a family decision with a lender in the room

Nobody needs a pool the way they need a working air conditioner. It is a want, often a dream, and it is usually financed. That means two spouses, sometimes grown kids, and a lender all have a say. We teach designers to get every decision maker to the consultation, to talk about financing early and plainly, and to give the family what they need to decide together instead of pushing for a signature they can't give yet.

The build is sold on a vision, then kept on a schedule

Families buy the summers they picture, not the steel and plumbing. Then the build takes weeks, with permits, weather and inspections along the way, and a family that feels ignored during construction does not refer anyone. We train designers to sell the vision honestly and to set clear expectations about the timeline, so the signed contract turns into a happy customer and the next referral.

How is pool sales training different for builders and service companies?

Builders need the full consultation

Designers and sales consultants who run new build and major remodel appointments need the whole sequence: backyard walk, diagnosis, design, options, financing and months of follow-up. We ride along, review recorded consultations and coach the parts that decide the build, especially the conversation after the proposal goes out.

Service teams need a short, honest conversation

Service techs see failing pumps, worn plaster and families asking about upgrades every week, but they are not salespeople and should not act like it. We train a short way to notice, explain and hand off the opportunity, and we train the office to follow up. If you are still the only one selling, one-on-one coaching may be the better place to start.

How is this different from a pool sales course?

Plenty of good programs exist, and some companies are well served by a course or a video library. Here is the honest difference, so you can pick the right fit.

How does a pool sales training engagement work?

Step one

We ride along and get your baseline

It starts with a free thirty-minute evaluation call, then ride-alongs and recorded consultations. We track consultations run, close rate by lead source, average build size, financing rate and how long open proposals sit. You see the numbers before anything changes.

Step two

We install the sequence in pool language

The seven steps stay the same. The wording is yours: your pool types and finishes, your equipment lines, your warranty, your financing partners and the objections your designers actually hear. We role play until it comes out in your designers' own words.

Step three

We coach on live consultations until it holds

We ride along, review recordings and fix the one habit that costs the most, then the next one. When the sequence survives a family holding two cheaper bids and a slow lender, it belongs to your team.

What does it cost to leave your pool sales process alone?

Nothing dramatic happens, and that is the problem. Here is an example, not a client result. Take a builder running 40 consultations a month at an average build near $66,000. Moving the close rate from 20 to 25 percent is two more builds and about $132,000 in monthly revenue from families you already met. Leave it alone and that money keeps leaving one “we went with another builder” at a time, while the marketing budget takes the blame.

What it looks like done right

01

Every designer runs the same consultation.

02

Both decision makers are there when the design is presented.

03

Proposals get followed up through financing instead of forgotten.

04

Builds get signed on value, not on the lowest bid.

Who will be training your pool designers?

Shawn Derrick founded Legacy Sales Engineering after 25 years in sales, much of it in customers’ homes. He has trained and overseen sales teams that generated more than $500 million in revenue across solar, roofing, windows, home security and remodeling. The framework your designers learn came out of appointments he ran himself: Solution Based Questions, the NEPQ approach, and Zig Ziglar’s rule that you get what you want by helping enough other people get what they want. Stop selling. Start solving.

Is pool sales training the right fit for your company?

Good fit

It is probably a good fit if

  • Two or more people run consultations or proposals
  • Close rates swing widely from designer to designer
  • Proposals sit for weeks without a scheduled follow-up
  • Your designers give away upgrades to get the signature
Not yet

It is not the right first move if

  • The phone isn’t ringing. Fix lead flow first with our pool marketing, and we will say so on the call.
  • You are the only one selling. Start with one-on-one coaching, then train the team you hire.

Pool sales training questions owners ask before they book

What is pool sales training?

It teaches the designers and sales consultants at a pool company a repeatable conversation: book both decision makers, walk the backyard with the family, diagnose first, design around what they said, present honest options with financing and follow up until they decide. Our version is delivered at your company and on live consultations, not through a video course.

How should a designer handle "we need to think about it"?

Agree, then help them think. Ask what they still need to decide, whether it is the budget, the lender, the design or the timing, and set a specific follow-up around that answer. A family that knows exactly what happens next is far more likely to come back than one left with a proposal and a promise to call.

How do you sell a pool when the family is still waiting on financing?

Talk about financing early, not at the end. We train designers to cover monthly payments and the lender process in the first consultation, keep the family moving through approval and follow up the day the answer comes back. Silence while the lender decides is where builds go to another company.

Do you train pool service companies too?

Yes. Service techs and office staff get a shorter version focused on noticing equipment and finish problems, explaining them honestly and handing off upgrade and remodel opportunities. Service teams should not act like salespeople, and our training does not ask them to.

Do you train pool teams outside Florida?

Yes. We are based in Hawthorne and Ocala, Florida. In-person training is concentrated in North Central Florida, and we travel for larger teams. Ride-along reviews, role play and follow-up coaching run remotely for pool companies anywhere in the US, using recorded consultations from your own designers.

How much does pool sales training cost?

We price by engagement, not per seat, and we tell you the number on the first call. The evaluation call is free, and if training isn't the right first move, you will hear that on the call, along with what we would do instead.

How long before close rates improve?

Most companies see movement within the first few weeks, because the biggest gains come from questions designers simply weren't asking. Because pool decisions take longer, the full effect shows up over a couple of months of real consultations, follow-up and coaching.

Let's find where your pool proposals are leaking

Thirty minutes, no pitch deck. We’ll look at your close rate by lead source, average build size and open proposals, and tell you plainly what we would fix first, even if the answer is that you don’t need us yet.
